The City of Saskatoon has decided against reopening University Bridge to general traffic for the time being.
“After discussions with emergency services and the Saskatchewan Health Authority, the decision to open the University Bridge to general traffic has been delayed temporarily to ensure that consistent emergency access to the hospitals and related services remains the priority,” the city shared in a Friday news release.
Current access routes on the bridge for pedestrians will remain usable.

The city said the contractor responsible for the construction work involving the bridge has been “making good progress,” and the city will continue to work with them through the first stage of work on College Drive from the bridge to Hospital Drive and University Drive.
“Opening the bridge to general traffic requires integration and coordination between the construction work on College Drive and the rehabilitation work of the arch on the bridge,” the city said.
“Additional information on when general traffic will flow across the bridge will be shared as details are confirmed for both construction projects.”
The city reminded people that Royal University Hospital and Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital can still both be accessed by patients and visitors.
The second stage of the construction work, from Hospital Drive to Cumberland Avenue, has begun on the north lanes of College Drive. One lane in either direction is being accommodated on the south lanes.
“The City thanks residents for their patience and understanding as these essential infrastructure projects continue and we ensure that public safety remains the priority,” the release stated.
