Murray Wood: Who's hot... and who's not
Every Friday, Murray Wood takes a look back at the week's news and decides who's hot... and who's not. This week's list ...
8:30 – The survey results are in, and a majority of people in Saskatchewan support social media limits for kids under 16. This lines up with a move from the feds for a social media ban, showing a clear sign that something needs to change. Lori Carr, Minister for Mental Health and Addictions, and Laura Lawrence, Youth Matter Canada executive director, join the show to talk about what the province will do with this information and how a media ban would impact youth.
Listener Question: Would limiting social media for kids actually make them better off, or would it just push them to find other ways around the rules?
9:00 – AI is moving into just about every part of our lives — from the classroom and the content we see online to how police gather information and even how we deal with grief. But is it all moving too fast? Are humans able to keep up and keep it regulated? There’s LOTS to talk about when it comes to AI, so we welcome Brian McQuinn, an associate professor at the University of Regina and co-director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Data and Conflict, back to the program.
LQ: Do you think we’re keeping up with AI, or is AI moving faster than our ability to understand and regulate it?
9:30 – Open phones – Evan goes to the phones to chat with listeners about what’s on their minds today. Call 1-877-332-8255.
10:00 – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is in Saskatchewan this weekend, and he joins the show ahead of his visit! We’ll ask him about the federal gas tax, tariffs and trade and what Canadians can expect from the Conservatives when MPs return to Ottawa later in September.
LQ: Do you think Pierre Poilievre is offering Canadians a real alternative to the Liberals, or simply criticizing the government?
10:30 – Bugs ‘n Hugs – Every Friday, we open the phone lines and give you a chance to call out or commend anyone you think deserves it. Call 1-877-332-8255 and join the conversation!
11:00 – What time is it? It’s Eatin’ Time! with Belton Johnson – powered by the Saskatchewan Cattle Association! Grillmaster Belton Johnson joins Evan with his recipe for reverse-seared, coffee-rubbed, smoked beef tenderloin.
11:15 – Later this month, The Comedy Pit showcases comedians from all walks of life, honing their clean stand-up routines. Evan welcomes Ari Avivi, Producer at The Comedy Pit, back to the show to talk about what attendees can expect and how the event also doubles as a fundraiser for local Saskatoon grassroots charities.
11:30 – Big science is happening right here in Saskatchewan, and the province is putting another $3 million toward keeping it at the cutting edge. Ingrid Pickering, interim CEO of Canadian Lightsource, joins the show to talk about what this funding boost actually means for the research happening here and what discoveries it could lead to.
11:50 – Domestic violence affects survivors and their children in profound ways, and having access to the right support can make a major difference. Maggie Semenchuck, a registered social worker and the intake worker at SOFIA House, joins us to talk about the work their organization does and how you can get involved in an upcoming fundraiser to help victims of domestic violence.
12:00 – Tally up the score, tell us who wins and the real winner could be you! It’s time for Green & White Prognostications presented by Paladin Canada. Pick the game winner and the closest combined score, and you could win a $100 Co-op gift card from Sherwood Co-op!
