Onion Lake Mounties arrest wanted man during routine traffic stop

A burnt-out headlight led Onion Lake RCMP officers to arrest a wanted man during a traffic stop on Sunday.

According to the RCMP, police received a report on Sept. 11 about a male pointing a firearm at someone at a home on the Onion Lake Cree Nation. Police said the suspect broke one of the home’s windows and threatened the victim, though no physical injuries were reported.

Investigators determined that a 23-year-old man from Onion Lake had been released on Sept. 10 from a correctional facility and was subject to statutory release conditions, the RCMP said. Correctional Service Canada issued a warrant for the 23-year-old’s arrest on Sept. 11, and Onion Lake RCMP officers worked to find and arrest him.

On Sunday, officers found the wanted man during patrols in Onion Lake.

When Mounties stopped a vehicle with a burnt-out headlight, the officers saw the suspect was a passenger, the RCMP said.

He was arrested and now faces eight charges, including pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breaking and entering to commit an indictable offence.
