The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre serves almost 8,000 clients each month, and during May the bank is holding a citywide food drive to help ensure nobody in the community goes hungry.
The theme of the campaign is “Don’t let your neighbour fall through the cracks,” calling attention to the growing number of people who are facing hardships with rising inflation and the high cost of living.
Laurie O’Connor, the food bank’s executive director, said it’s important to replenish the food bank’s shelves after the holiday season.
“With the cost of living increasing, we are seeing a high need in our community for food, and we strongly encourage Saskatoon citizens to take part in this campaign to help give back to those who need it,” O’Connor said in a statement.

Anyone can get involved in the food drive by donating non-perishable items or money, or by buying hampers available at local grocery stores.
“The SFBLC’s most wanted food items include baby food and formula, canned fruits and vegetables, hearty soups and stews, whole grain pasta and cereals, canned protein, and peanut butter,” the food bank noted.
Businesses and faith-based communities were also encouraged to organize food drives and put together a team to collect as many donations as possible. The food bank can deliver donation barrels to groups organizing food drives, and will arrange for a pickup within the last two weeks of the month.
