Saskatoon’s food bank and a local rock radio station have partnered up to tackle hunger in the community.
Rock 102 has once again partnered with the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre on its Stuff the Bus campaign. The annual event aims to completely fill a Saskatoon Transit bus with donated food.
Donations of food or cash can be dropped off at the Saskatoon Co-op Food Store on Eighth Street from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 27.
“Stuff the Bus is one of the many ways people can get involved and show their support to the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre,” Laurie O’Connor, the food bank’s executive director, said in a statement.
“With the increasing costs of living, we all need to play a role in making sure folks have food on the table.”
Community groups and individuals can register on the food bank’s website for a food barrel to collect donations ahead of the event.
This is the 19th annual Stuff the Bus campaign. The event started back in 2005, when Eroca Pellerin, a Saskatoon Transit operator, brought the idea to her supervisors.
“Since then, Rock 102’s stuff the bus has donated over 520,000 pounds of food and raised over $508,000,” the food bank said.
This year, the food bank’s most-wanted items include baby food, formula, canned fruits and veggies, hearty stews and soups, whole-grain pasta and cereal, canned protein and peanut butter.
“In addition to food, cash donations are equally important and allow the organization to take advantage of bulk purchasing power to help restock depleted supplies due to increased demand,” the food bank added.
Rock 102 is the sister station to 650 CKOM.
