Thursday is expected to bring several thunderstorms to southern Saskatchewan, some of them bringing large hail, strong winds and heavy downpours.
Environment Canada meteorologist Mike Russo says rain is expected to start in western Saskatchewan in the morning, bringing thunderstorms through Regina.
The rain and clouds are expected to clear in the afternoon before low pressure moves through, which may bring thunderstorms back in the afternoon. Russo said those storms are expected to impact more of eastern Saskatchewan from Hudson Bay to Yorkton.
“Some of those thunderstorms could be severe,” Russo said, admitting that there is a possibility for tornadic activity throughout the day.
Russo expects thunderstorm watches and warnings to be issued throughout the day. See the latest alerts here.
Tornado Hunter urges caution
Tornado hunter Greg Johnson joined the CJME Morning Show to talk about what weather people can expect to see over the weekend.
“We’re going to see storms across Saskatchewan. It’s summer time, it’s warm, it’s humid and that’s what happens.”
Johnson as well advised that people traveling in certain parts of the province this weekend to be cautious.
“The only real area I would be concerned about is Saturday, if I was coming up from places like Coronach … or coming up across the border … Saturday is really kind of the best chance that we’re going to see for tornados.”
Johnson also has advice for people who may want to take pictures of tornados.
“The big one is common sense…its weather it does weird things from time to time…if you don’t know what you’re getting into you maybe back off a little bit.”
