A NEW CHAPTER IN GIVING:
ADOPT-A-FAMILY JOINS THE CHRISTMAS HAMPER PROGRAM
For more than 35 years, the Adopt-A-Family program has brought joy to Saskatoon families in need and ignited the spirit of giving during the holiday season through The Salvation Army.
When it began in 1988, the program collected $5,000 to support local families. Since then, the need for Christmas assistance has grown significantly, reflecting both the changing face of our community and the increasing number of families facing financial challenges.
To better meet this demand, Adopt-A-Family is transitioning into The Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper Program. The heart of the mission remains the same: to support low-income Saskatoon families with children during the Christmas season. Through the Hamper Program, families receive food, grocery gift cards and gifts to ensure no child goes without at Christmas.
Captain Angela Kerr of The Salvation Army, who oversees programs supporting families in need, explains the importance of this transition:
“The Salvation Army continues to face a growing need in our communities every year. In 2024, over 3,700 families received assistance during the Christmas Season,” Kerr said. “Our goal is to support as many families as possible, and the donations that sponsors provide goes a long way to making sure everyone has a very Merry Christmas.”
