Regina police have found the person they believe to be responsible for deliberately-set fires in the northeast.
Police say an 11-year-old is believed to be responsible for six fires set between Nov. 23 and Nov. 28. Those fires happened in the 400 block of Lorne Street, 200 block of Halifax Street, 500 block of Halifax Street, 300 block of Toronto Street, and 300 block of St. John Street.
In each case, recycling and garbage bins were set ablaze, which in some cases spread to a nearby garage and fence.
The child cannot be charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because of their age. The act only applies to those between the ages of 12 and 17.
Regina police said there are resources in our community that may help to educate and assist the youth to prevent further problems. The youth has been referred to resources including the Regina Fire and Protective Services’ Youth Firestarters Education Program and the 11UI Initiative.
The investigation into these fires is continuing.
Police advise residents to only leave their recycle and garbage containers out on pickup dates and place them away from a garage or fence.
