Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release on Oct. 5, that officers from the Melville detachment were called about the crash on Highway 10 roughly nine kilometres northeast of Melville around 7:10 p.m.
When they arrived, emergency medical services personnel found the woman severely injured, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed she was a local resident from the surrounding Melville detachment area. Investigators have since notified her family.
The person driving the vehicle involved in the crash stayed at the scene following the impact, and paramedics assessed both the driver and a passenger for injuries at the roadside, though police did not say if either required further hospital treatment.
RCMP did not released the identity of the dead woman or provide details on any potential charges.
Local RCMP officers are continuing their investigation and are working alongside a specialized Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstruction expert. The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service has also been called in to assist.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant dash-cam footage from Highway 10 on Friday evening to contact their local detachment.
The fatal collision highlights a challenging year for traffic safety across the province, with the summer months especially deadly.
RCMP said in late July that since the beginning of June, 23 collisions have killed 27 people in Saskatchewan, representing a 77 per cent increase in fatal crashes compared to June and July last year.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Lee Knelsen, an inspector and traffic services operations officer, said by midsummer lives lost in 2026 in road crashes represents an 88 per cent increase compared to last year.
The RCMP inspector said officers are also seeing more situations involving drug and alcohol impairment.
In the first six months of 2025, 35 per cent of fatal collisions were investigated as involving alcohol and/or drugs as a contributing factor. Knelsen noted in July that number for the same period of time in 2026 has jumped to 52 per cent.
