Closures coming to major Saskatoon roads this weekend and Monday

Saskatoon drivers may need to find a different route this weekend, with closures coming to a number of major roads around the city.

According to the City of Saskatoon, a number of high-traffic roads will see closures starting over the weekend and on Monday to make way for construction work and special events, and detour signs will be in place to guide drivers.

The first closure will see Spadina Crescent East closed from 21st Street East to Silverwood Road in order to accommodate the Step Up for Mental Health race. The event will also see 24th Street East closed between Fourth Avenue North and Spadina, while Fourth Avenue North will be closed between 24th Street East and 20th Street East.

Those restrictions start at 7 a.m. on Saturday and run until 3 p.m. on Sunday, the city said.

Another event – the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival – will see 21st Street East closed from First Avenue South to Second Avenue South on Saturday. The city said those restrictions run from 2-10 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the northbound ramp connecting Idylwyld Drive North to 51st Street East will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for storm drain repairs.

On Monday, a number of additional restrictions take effect, including a closure of McCormack Road between Borland Place and Kinloch Crescent to make way for paving work, running from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At 8 a.m. on Monday, 115th Street East will be closed from Central to Rayner avenues for sewer work, with the project expected to wrap up at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The city said 20th Street West will be closed from Montreal Avenue South to Ottawa Avenue South for road patching work. That closure is expected to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Finally, Victoria Avenue will be closed from Taylor Street East to Second Street East for water main work. The city said the four-week project starts on Monday at 1 p.m.

Closure extended as downtown water main work continues

The city said the closures of the Second Avenue and Fourth Avenue intersections downtown will be extended for “approximately one week” to allow workers to complete paving.

“During this time, there will be no access to 25th Street East from the surrounding back alleys,” the city said in a statement.

“The extended closures are being coordinated to avoid a full closure of 25th Street East during paving.”

After paving is complete on Second Avenue, the city said the intersection will reopen. But on Monday, Oct. 5, a closure will begin at First Avenue and 25th Street East, which is expected to run for two and a half weeks.

“Closure end times are weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances,” the city noted in a statement.

“Saskatoon Transit may be affected by these detours. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.”
