Wildfire smoke drifting into northeast Saskatchewan has prompted an air quality warning from Environment Canada.
The warning area begins just north of Montreal Lake and Nipawin, stretching to the Manitoba border and as far north as Reindeer Lake. Deschambault Lake, La Ronge, Pelican Narrows, Pinehouse, Sandy Bay, Stanley Mission and Southend are all covered by the warning.

“Wildfire smoke will continue affecting some areas through the middle of the week,” Environment Canada said in a statement.
“Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.”

The weather service advised residents to limit time spent outdoors and consider rescheduling outdoor events, especially sporting events.
“You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough,” Environment Canada said. “More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.”
Those at greatest risk for health issues are residents aged 65 and older, pregnant women, infants and young children and those with chronic health conditions or illnesses, Environment Canada noted.
The weather service said indoor air quality can be maintained by keeping windows and doors closed, and using a high-quality filter in ventilation systems, adding that a portable air cleaner can also help to filter out fine particles.
If spending time outdoors can’t be avoided during periods of low air quality, the weather service advised wearing a respirator mask.
The latest updates on the air quality alert can be found on Environment Canada’s website.
