One man is dead and two others were hospitalized following a fight at the maximum-security unit of the Saskatchewan Penitentiary on Tuesday.
Correctional Service Canada said Horace Bear, who began serving a sentence of just under three years on Dec. 13, has died. Two other inmates were evaluated by corrections staff and taken to an outside hospital for treatment. One inmate returned the same day, while the other man remains in hospital.

The RCMP confirmed that officers are investigating the death.
“The male’s death is considered suspicious. As a result, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has taken carriage of the investigation,” the Mounties said in a news release.
No staff members were injured in the fight.
The maximum-security unit was locked down and operations were modified in the wake of Bear’s death. The institution continues to operate on a modified routine.
Correctional Service Canada said it will review the circumstances, as it does in all cases involving the death of an inmate.
