Ethan Spiess and Owen Schultz are taking steps in honour of their fellow Canadian Armed Forces members who were killed and injured at CFB Wainwright earlier this month.
The two army reservists in Saskatoon are walking around the city to log 200 kilometres, raising money for the Canadian Red Cross — who helps train CAF members in first aid — as they do.
One of the men in Schultz’s unit was among those injured and remains in critical condition, he said.

“It was really tragic,” Spiess said.
“We’re taking time out of our day and spending our own money, and we don’t really care about that,” he shared. “It’s for our brothers and sisters.”
“I think he burned up pretty bad,” Schwartz shared, though he said he doesn’t know the man well.
“I know it affected a lot of my peers at the unit.”

The pair did not plan a route for the walk, but are staying on-pace to finish within 35 and 40 hours. Having started their trek around 6 a.m. on Monday, they hope to finish by Tuesday evening, which will include walking overnight.
Both Schwartz and Spiess have to go back to work on Wednesday morning, they reported.
Previously, Spiess said he’s never run further than eight kilometres. Schwartz recently participated in the 10-kilometre event during Saskatoon’s Step Up for Mental Health race in September.
Spiess said he hadn’t been doing too much physical training through the summer, though Schwartz had.
“Owen went pretty hard,” he said.
Just shy of 40 km into their walk on Monday afternoon — the pair recorded 36 km in about 7 hours and 40 minutes — the two army reservists were in high spirits and reported feeling in good condition.
“I think around kilometre 100 I’ll definitely start to feel it,” Schwartz said. “Your feet and your knees kind of hurt a little bit.”
The two are travelling with layers, changes of clothes and lots of carbs and salty snacks, including chocolate bars for “some morale,” as Schwartz described with a chuckle.
Wearing Canadian Armed Forces shirts and carrying large green backpacks, the two are posting updates to their social media throughout the walk. They’ve been grateful to see some friends and wave at others along the way.

“Honks would be sick,” the two men agreed, saying they’d welcome any and all support people are willing to give them.
“If you want to come and walk with us, or to give us a meal or something, anything. Just be there for motivation, that’s cool,” Ethan shared.
“You can send us a message on Instagram, and we’ll definitely have you out here.”
