If hazardous household waste is taking up space in your home, the City of Saskatoon wants to help you get rid of it.
Until 4 p.m. today, the city’s Sort and Go at the Material Recovery Centre on 42 Valley Road will take the garbage that doesn’t go into your regular bins. Normally, it’s a program only open on Wednesdays.

Some of the accepted items include light bulbs, aerosols, car fluids, cleaners, and yard chemicals.
According to the city, the program, “makes it easier for residents to safely dispose of items that should not go in regular waste carts or bins because they can harm the environment, pose risks to public health and create safety hazards for staff.”
While batteries are commonly dropped off with hazardous waste, there are plenty of other options for battery disposal. They’re accepted at any SARCAN depot and daily at the Sort and Go.
The hazardous wastes only apply to household products. Any commercial loads won’t be accepted, according to the city.
Containers need to be safely sealed with the contents clearly marked. Containers used for transporting some waste will potentially not be returned. Anything used to bring in gasoline will not be given back.
For those who can’t make it this weekend, there will be another special weekend drop-off day on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The seasonal program’s last drop-off day will be Wednesday, Oct. 28, depending on the weather.
It’s a program that’s had a steady increase in participation in Saskatoon.
In 2024, there were 2,257 depot visits, with 60.33 tonnes of material collected. That increased to 2,715 visits in 2025 and a collection of 69.88 tonnes.
The full list of what’s accepted for hazardous household waste is:
- Acid — battery acid, , sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid
- Aerosols — insect repellant, , furniture cleaner, bear spray
- Cleaners — products labelled caution, warning, corrosive, explosive, flammable, poisonous or toxic.
- Cylinders (non-refillable) — propane (camp cylinders 1 lb), helium, oxygen, acetylene, fire extinguishers, MAP gas, butane, carbon dioxide. Maximum container size is 5kg
- Corrosives — engine degreaser, ammonia, battery acid, sulfuric acid, grout cleaner, masonry cleaner, rust remover, with a maximum container size of 10 L
- Flammable Liquids (including fuels) — gasoline (no diesel), acetone, BBQ lighter fluid, camping or fondue fuel, flammable degreasers, flammable fuel treatment and additives, flammable liquid adhesives, flammable lubricants, kerosene, methanol, methyl hydrate, mineral spirits, paint stripper and thinners, paint and varnish removers, turpentine, varsol, other flammable solvents. Maximum container size is 10 litres (25 litres for gasoline only).
- Light bulbs and ballasts — fluorescent light ballasts (with or without PCBs), light bulbs
- Mercury — mercury, mercury thermometers
- Oxidizing chemicals — chlorine, bleach, pool chemicals, fertilizer, hydrogen peroxide
- Pesticides — pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, including the word domestic, poison symbol, has a Pest Control Product number
- Solvents — varsol, paint thinner, naphtha, acetone, toluene, xylene, alcohol, benzene
- Toxics — Automotive additives, furniture stripper, tar and bug remover with a maximum container size 10 L
