Driver charged after crashing into slough on Highway 16

A driver was arrested and charged early on Friday morning after crashing into a slough on Highway 16, near Saskatoon.

According to the Corman Park Police Service, officers got a report about the crash, saying the driver was “sitting in waist-deep water” at around 3 a.m.

The police force said officers located the vehicle with help from the Saskatoon Police Service’s airplane, and police directed the driver to shore safely.

The City of Saskatoon said firefighters entered the water to ensure nobody else was inside the vehicle after the crash, before turning the scene over to police.

“The driver displayed obvious signs of impairment and was arrested,” police said in a statement. “EMS assessed the driver, and they were determined to be in good condition.”

Police said the driver was charged with impaired driving and refusing to comply with a breath demand.

“This incident serves as another reminder of the dangers of impaired driving,” Corman Park police added. “Thankfully, this event did not result in serious injury or loss of life.”
