Woman arrested after eight-hour standoff in Saskatoon’s Avalon area Tuesday: Police

An attempt by Saskatoon police officers to serve an arrest warrant on Tuesday led to an eight-hour standoff at a home in the city’s Avalon neighbourhood.

The situation began just before 9 a.m. on June 30, when officers attempted to serve the warrant of arrest to an occupant in a home in the 2500 block of Melrose Avenue.

“The female subject has since refused to cooperate with officers and has remained inside the home,” police said in a news release shared just before 3 p.m.

In an update issued on Thursday, police said the 43-year-old woman, who was “wanted on outstanding criminal code warrants,” was arrested following the standoff.

“She was released from police custody on an undertaking for admission to hospital under The Mental Health Services Act,” police said.

Four arrested after allegedly fleeing traffic stop

Just before 2:30 p.m. on June 29, Saskatoon police officers in the area of 8th Street East and Ewart Avenue saw a vehicle driving erratically.

“Upon attempting a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and police disengaged. Further investigation determined that this same vehicle had been reported multiple times earlier in the day for erratic driving,” a release from police reported.

The vehicle was seen later by officers at Idylwyld Drive North and 29th Street. Another traffic stop was attempted and again, the vehicle fled from officers until a tire deflation device was successfully deployed.

The four occupants of the vehicle – two men, ages 18 and 19, and two women, ages 18 and 40 – were arrested in the 1300 block of Alexandra Avenue. Police located and seized a sawed-off shotgun upon searching the vehicle.

Police have laid various charges against the four people, relating to weapons and evading police.
