If you get a text message claiming you need to appear in court for a traffic ticket, it’s likely a scam.
Both the Saskatoon and Regina police services are warning the public about the fraudulent messages. According to police, the scammers claim to be a police officer, and tell the recipient they must appear in court due to a traffic violation. The scammer then asks their potential victim to click a link in order to pay a fine.

“This is a scam. Residents are being advised to block the number and ignore the text. Do not click the link or make any payments to this website,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.
“The Saskatoon Police Service will never send a text message regarding payments of any kind.”
Police in Regina offered the same advice, saying legitimate government agencies will not ask a person to resolve legal matters “through unsolicited text messages.”
The Regina Police Service said the scammers try to create a sense of urgency in order to pressure their victims to act quickly. Police said red flags to watch out for include messages claiming you owe a fine or have an upcoming court date, threats of legal action or arrest, requests for personal or financial information or links directing you to “take action” in order to resolve the issue.
Anyone who believes they have unresolved traffic citations was advised to contact the courts directly. Victims of scams or fraud were advised to contact police or report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
