LutherCare Communities said it is reassuring residents and families in six unionized group homes that will be affected by Service Employees’ International Union-West (SEIU-West) job action.
SEIU-West, which represents workers at the care home, said some services will be withdrawn by its members as it delivered a strike notice on Monday.
The union said the services would be withdrawn until LutherCare put forward a “fair deal to settle a long overdue collective agreement.”
The strike is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
In a release sent Tuesday afternoon, LutherCare said safety and security would be its top priority.
The release also stated that talks between SEIU-West and LutherCare ended on March 1.
LutherCare also stated that it reached out to SEIU-West following the 14-day cooling off period.
SEIU has been bargaining over wages, the introduction of a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday and two consecutive days off of work, saying many full-time staff have had to work seven straight days.
“We have reached out on several occasions to the union asking for clarification on their position regarding our last offer and there has been no response to date,” Chad Okrainetz of LutherCare said in a statement.
“We believe we have offered a fair package that includes a wage increase retroactive to April 1st, 2023, increased medical care leave, a signing bonus and the inclusion of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday. We are hoping we can get back to the bargaining table soon for further discussion on these issues.”
LutherCare said it was pleased to see that medical appointments and urgent care were not impacted by the job action.
The company also defended its scheduling of employees.
“While we cannot offer every weekend off due to our commitment to provide 24/7 care, we do schedule our shifts to ensure that Team Members are eligible for at least two days off each week, except in situations where a Team Member elects to work overtime on their days off.”
