An annual winter fundraiser is back for 2023, aiming to ensure Saskatoon kids have enough warm clothes to get them through the winter.
Rock 102’s Coats for Kids fundraiser has been running since 2004, and over that time the event has collected more than 26,000 warm winter coats and accessories and raised more than $350,000. The winter clothes are donated to elementary schools around the city through a partnership with Care & Share.
Sandi Meldrum, Care & Share’s executive director, said kids need warm coats – as well as toques and mittens – to get to and from school safely during the harsh winters we see in Saskatchewan.
“This is an expense many families cannot afford,” Meldrum said in a news release.
“If it’s cold and they don’t have the proper winter clothes, then they don’t go to school. That’s not an acceptable option, so we need to come together as a community and make sure every child has a warm coat to get to school.”
Rock 102 – 650 CKOM’s sister station – is now accepting gently used jackets, snow suits, pants, scarves, toques, mittens and boots to help keep children warm in the coming months. Cash donations are also accepted, and are used to purchase new coats.
The collection day is set for Saturday, Oct. 14 at 102-502 Cope Way in Stonebridge.
