The call at St. Michael School that Regina police initially said involved “a suspicious item” turned into what the force later called “an act of public mischief.”
In a media release late Wednesday afternoon, police explained the situation that had resulted in a response from the Explosives Disposal Unit.
Police said that about 10:20 a.m., the communications centre got a call from someone who was using the play structure at St. Michael, located in the 400 block of Hamilton Street. The caller told police there was something suspicious lying on the ground under a bench.
Officers who attended confirmed there was what the release called “an item of concern,” so the bomb squad was called.
Police said that just after 2 p.m., the investigators completed their assessment of the item and disposed of it.
“The item was assembled to look like an explosive device, however investigation revealed it was not,” the police release said. “This appears to be an act of public mischief.”
Police are asking anyone with information that could help their investigation to call them at 306-777-6500 or Regina Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
