As Russia threatens to invade Ukraine, members of Saskatoon’s Ukrainian community want to do what they can even from so far away.
“Our community is extremely concerned about this increase in Russian aggression. Saskatoon has a large Ukrainian community and many of us have family and friends in Ukraine,” Christina Rybalka, the president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress chapter in Saskatoon, told 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks Show.
“We are very concerned about their welfare.”
Rybalka is encouraging people to join the congress with its National Call to Action on Saturday. It’s the Day of Unity of Ukraine and she is hoping people will show their support by uploading a picture to social media.
Through the UCC’s website, people are asked to download the poster in support of Ukraine, then take a picture with it and post it on social media using the hashtag #StandWithUkraine.
“This will be part of a national social media campaign to bring awareness to what’s happening in Ukraine and urge our government to take action,” she said.
Rybalka is also asking people to write to their local MP and ask them to support Ukraine.
“Ultimately we want to support the Ukrainian people and we just hope and pray that further war doesn’t happen,” she said.
