SaskPower’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility in Estevan has reached a milestone.
According to a release Wednesday, the facility located at Boundary Dam Power Station hit a plateau Tuesday with four million tonnes of carbon dioxide captured since it opened in 2014.
The milestone represents greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking one million passenger vehicles off the road for an entire year.
“This facility was the first of its kind in the world and stands as a strong example of our government’s commitment to supporting innovation,” Don Morgan, Saskatchewan’s minister responsible for SaskPower, said in Wednesday’s release.
“We believe finding technological solutions such as CCS are crucial for transitioning to a prosperous, low-carbon future.”
SaskPower said it is on track to meet the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expects that, by 2023, emissions will be reduced by more than 40 per cent from 2005 levels.
