The SaskTel Centre will not be packed this Nov. 11 with people looking to pay their respects on Remembrance Day.
Instead, a virtual ceremony will be held Wednesday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and running to 11:30 a.m.
The Saskatoon Citizens Committee said in a media release Tuesday the program will be broadcast live on Shaw Spotlight, YouTube and on its website at saskatoonremembers.ca.
“As we all can appreciate, COVID-19 has drastically impacted how we conduct our lives. In many cases, events have been cancelled or altered. As a Committee, we were faced with the challenge of how to conduct the Act of Remembrance service in a meaningful way, when unable to gather en masse at SaskTel Centre,” the release reads.
On Oct. 5, committee chair Brent Winges told 650 CKOM that it has been a while since the ceremony in Saskatoon didn’t physically happen.
“It probably goes way back to the ’20s and ’30s when they actually started having Remembrance Day service here … It used to be held right in the middle of downtown quite often in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s,” he said. “We’ve been at SaskTel Centre ever since they opened up (in 1988).”
The program will involve three unique components using the theme “Veterans They Live Amongst Us.”
The program will have interviews with modern-day veterans from Saskatoon, the Act of Remembrance service which was pre-recorded in October and a reading of “In Flanders Fields.”
