There are plans for dozens of new affordable housing rental units in Saskatoon. Up to 55 in total.
The Lighthouse, Central Urban Metis Federation Inc., and K.C. Charities have all applied for money, according to Lesley Anderson, director of planning and development.
“They’re three different rental projects in different parts of the city,” she explained. “They’ve applied under our Attainable Housing Program, innovative housing incentives that we’ve offered for many years. The city offers up to a 10 per cent capital grant towards affordable rental units, to contribute to these projects.”
According to information to be presented to council on Monday, The K.C. Charities project will be 30 affordable seniors rental units to be located at 3002 and 3012 Louise Avenue. The group is asking for $339,574.
The Central Urban Metis Federation Inc. (CUMFI) project ask is for $178,437. It will be located at 412 Avenue P South and will include 15 affordable rental units for Metis elders.
Both seniors buildings are scheduled to be completed in late 2021.
The Lighthouse unit will include renovating a duplex to include 10 boarding style bedrooms with a shared kitchen, laundry, bath and living room at 2942-2944 Cumberland Ave. S.
It is scheduled to be completed sometime in the next couple of weeks. Those living in the boarding rooms will also have access to various Lighthouse support services. The Lighthouse is asking for $47,200 in funding, and may also be eligible for a five-year incremental tax abatement adding up to nearly $5,000.
Anderson says each year, the goal is to support the creation of 200 affordable housing units which they’ve met and exceeded this year.
“This program has been in operation for many years,” explained Anderson. “It’s helped us provide a variety of housing types across the city and in many areas to respond to the housing needs we have, whether that’s for affordable rental or entry-level home ownership and supportive housing as well.”
