Although he wasn’t in the courtroom in Humboldt on Monday morning, an assault charged against an assistant coach with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos was dropped.
Curtis Toneff was charged with assault in connection with a May 24 incident in Humboldt, according to RCMP Cpl. Rob King.
On July 19, the Broncos suspended Toneff until further notice due to the criminal charge.
The court appearance Monday was to be Toneff’s first on the charge. He was not in attendance but his lawyer appeared by telephone.
The Crown directed a stay of proceedings.
The team released a brief statement saying Toneff is allowed to resume duties with the hockey club.
Toneff is originally from Nanaimo, B.C. He joined the Broncos at the beginning of the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach following five years coaching in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).
The 27-year-old played his junior hockey in the BCHL, VIJHL, Manitoba Junior Hockey League and SJHL, appearing in 33 games with the Battlefords North Stars in 2011-12.
