A Saskatoon church is collecting donations for the families devastated by a house fire on Saturday.
Hampton Free Methodist Church filled their gymnasium with food, clothes and essential household supplies for donation. They also raised over $3500 in cash and gift cards.
Seth Freeman, one of two co-lead pastors, told CKOM more than 200 people chipped in to help.
“It’s incredible. It was so overwhelming. We stopped receiving items on Sunday… it’s just that we have enough here. But people keep bringing money as well,” he said.
They began the initiative when community members approached them looking for a way to help.
“We knew the community was going to rally around them, but having that central point to coordinate and facilitate all that generosity makes it a lot easier for the families,” he explained.
Giving a helping hand is nothing new to this church, so it seemed like a natural move to Freeman and his team of volunteers.
“We’re the church in the community, and we saw a position where we were uniquely suited for exactly that kind of thing. This is what we exist to do. We saw people in need, and knew that we could help,” he said.
“I just want to say ‘thank you’ to everybody who pitched in. There are too many to name them all, so we’re really thankful we got to be a part of this.”
