Sports does many things for us. One is that sports allows us to live vicariously through others.
It was great to hear Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love talk about his experience at the world junior hockey championships as an assistant coach for Team Canada. Winning is always a great feeling. However, I found it interesting to hear Love say that one of his highlights came at the training camp in southern Ontario.
He had family on hand, and talked about hearing the anthem at the gold-medal game when Canada won. But a high point for Love was to tell the players they had made the team before it went overseas.
You don’t get to be a respected coach in major junior hockey unless you put players first. In that way, his answer made a lot of sense. However, it wasn’t a response I thought I’d hear when Love was asked about a tournament highlight.
It was obviously another great moment for him, and great for us to get that perspective.
