If getting in shape is one of your New Year’s resolutions, the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan has some advice on getting a gym membership.
It says remember to read the full contract and understand the terms and conditions. By law, the agreement cannot last longer than two years.
Make sure you know exactly what you will be paying, whether there are extra fees for classes, trainers or other services.
There are also a few circumstances where you can cancel your membership.
You can do so within seven days of getting a written copy but also if you move more than 30 kilometres from the gym or one of its locations.
Cancellation is also allowed if your doctor finds physical, medical or mental symptoms that would prevent you from working out.
As well, if the gym makes “material changes” in its services or if the facility moves more than 10 km.
If there’s something you do not understand about the membership, remember to ask questions.
