A Saskatoon artist has paid her respects to local legend Sailor Dan.
Earlier this month, Dan Hicks died. He was fondly remembered for traveling the city on foot to sell drawings of ships.
The Broadway Business Improvement District arranged for a mural to be put up in his honour.
Broadway Avenue was well-known as one of Hick’s favourite spots.
Jillian Bogan made the painting in his likeness.
She said this mural is in the same artistic spirit that Hicks was so well known for.
“The drawings that he’s left are what keep him alive in the community,” she told 650 CKOM.
She said it was an easy decision.
“I got really excited. I was like ‘this is exactly what I do, this is exactly what I want to do,'” she said.
She even thinks Hicks was the perfect fit for her art style.
“I tend to paint older people with really (character-filled) faces, and he had one of those for sure.”
Bogan said the city isn’t the same without him.
“Sailor Dan is a staple of Saskatoon… he’s affected everybody around.”
You can see the mural next to Sushi Haru, a restaurant on Broadway Avenue.
