For the past three CFL seasons, a West Division team has crossed over to the East Division playoffs. The last time three East Division teams advanced to the playoffs was 2015.
This isn’t good for the Canadian Football League, when attendance numbers have been soft, especially east of the Manitoba border.
The 2-2 Alouettes likely needed to get rid of GM Kavis Reed. Montreal has won back-to-back games, but Reed is 10-30 as Alouettes GM in the last 2 1/2 years.
That is reason enough for a change. It is unfortunate to hear reports that his dismissal may be about less-than-honourable behaviour. This league doesn’t need any more negative media in some parts of Ontario and Quebec, where they already believe that the CFL is a “lower-profile sport” as recently described by one Toronto media member.
The Alouettes need to keep winning, and new ownership needs to take hold in Montreal soon, to get and keep the focus on football.
