Saskatoon’s mayor took to Instagram Friday night to update people on his condition after he was involved in a car crash last week.
Charlie Clark thanked everyone who sent him messages of support as he recovers from a concussion sustained from a rear-end collision as he was stopped at a red light, waiting to turn last Sunday.
“I really feel grateful to be part of this community,” Clark wrote in the Instagram post. “I’ve also been reminded how great of a team of people I am surrounded by, who have taken extra loads while I’ve stepped back, in my family, on council, in my office and city staff.”
Clark went on to document the efforts of his recovery, saying he was “discouraged on Wednesday at my continued levels of fatigue and fuzziness.”
However, an assessment the following day taught him a valuable lesson.
“I learned with a concussion, you often have to get worse before getting better,” he said.
Clark has resumed light duties — like reading, taking phone calls and smaller meetings — but will take additional time to recover before he is seen at public events.
“It turns out public events and giving speeches require the brain to work really hard — and pushing the brain like that too early after a concussion can just prolong the recovery time and cause other problems,” Clark said.
