10:00 – A federal judge has ordered Canada’s lobbying commissioner to reopen an investigation into Justin Trudeau’s trips to the private island of the Aga Khan in the Bahamas, after a request for a ruling by Democracy Watch. The complaint was initially dismissed in 2017 because the Aga Khan is not a registered lobbyist, but Democracy Watch argued he’s the director of a registered lobbying group (the Aga Khan Foundation) and pointed to nearly $30M contributed to the Foundation’s projects by federal agencies. In his decision, Justice Gleeson wrote that the initial ruling was “unreasonable” and “reflects a narrow, technical and targeted analysis that is lacking in transparency, justification, and intelligibility…” To help explain the case John is joined by Duff Conacher, Democracy Watch’s co-founder.
