One of Saskatchewan’s best amateur coaches in any sport, at any level, is Lisa Thomaidis from the U of S Huskies women’s basketball team.
In a Sunday tweet, she posted that we need more U Sports women’s basketball on television to showcase our Canadian talent. She is right.
So today I take up an age-old debate. Before I get too far in to this commentary, let me just say that digital and streaming video broadcasts in any league have never been, are not, and will never be as effective as over-the-air national broadcasts on nationwide sports networks.
U Sports’ over-the-air television exposure is terrible and has been for years.
Right now the two football semi-finals, the Vanier Cup, a weekend of men’s hockey and a weekend of men’s and women’s basketball are all that gets to air on SN360.
In the meantime, American college football, basketball and even hockey games are shown on Canadian sports television more regularly.
U Sports should have had a stronger national television agreement in place years ago. It’s an unfortunate dilemma that will forever be beyond repair.
