Playful pigs explore environmental enrichment for enhanced health: Madelena Pedersen-Macnab, Master’s student in large animal clinical sciences
Playful pigs explore environmental enrichment for enhanced health: This image shows three young pigs manipulating a soft cotton rope during an experiment exploring the effect of environmental enrichment on disease resilience in swine. Pigs are highly intelligent and curious about their environment- providing environmental enrichment is an important component of their care, and far more meaningful than just providing “toys.” Carefully-selected objects that support expression of the natural behavioural repertoire of pigs can improve their welfare, health and productivity. This study explores how environmental enrichment influences pig social behaviour and immune response to disease. Research in this area furthers our understanding on the role of enrichment in pig health and well-being. (Madelena Pedersen-Macnab, Master’s student in large animal clinical sciences)
