The Saskatchewan Roughriders added another leg to the kicking room.
Saskatchewan added kicker Campbell Fair to the CFL club’s roster on Wednesday.
“It’s huge. This is why I have been training and why I have been staying ready. It’s a good opportunity, so (I) just have to take it,” Fair said following practice.
A lot of attention has been paid to the struggles of kicker Brett Lauther, who is only good on 22 of his 33 field goal attempts this season—his 66.7 per cent success rate is the lowest among all CFL kickers.
Fair was drafted in the sixth round (51st overall) by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2023 CFL Draft. The Oakville, Ont., product attended camp with the Stamps but was released. He signed with the Riders in 2023 and spent time on the practice roster.
He signed with the Edmonton Elks in September 2024 and attended the 2025 training camp with them.
Fair said he was contacted on Monday to come to Saskatchewan, and that led to quite the journey to reach Mosaic Stadium.
“I got the call Monday night around 8 p.m. and started packing frantically right away. I got out of the house around 9:30 and I started in Prince Edward County, Ontario, and I had to get to Buffalo by the following morning. I drove to Hamilton, slept a bit and then in the morning, we drove to Buffalo. I got on the flight and I had cancellations and delays and had to rearrange all my flights but we got here last night at 3 a.m.
“A big shoutout to (Director of Football Operations) Jordan Greenly for staying up late and driving me here.”
Head coach Corey Mace said like every other position, you bring guys into the building to compete.
“It’s good for Campbell, and I think it’s good for Brett there to have a previous relationship (with each other) as well,” Mace said.
“As an organization, we are going to look at everything. It’s not saying anything other than we have another guy on the roster. We will see how it all plays out but I think you guys know how I feel about Brett.”
For Lauther, he said he just wants to be the best teammate he can be, no matter what is going on.
“We can’t preach family in the dressing room and then act differently behind the scenes. Everyone on this team gets to eat, everyone gets treated fairly and everyone is a big part of the team, whether you are starting or not,” Lauther said. “A lot of stuff the offence or the defence does that you see works in the game is because a guy in practice is giving them the right look.
“I would never change or be different. Just stay true to myself in the first place. I’m always going to be there, whether I am the one playing. I’ve said before, I’m not going to get to play forever, so I’m never going to be bitter or have any of that side with me. I’m just enjoying every day I get to come in here and put on green and hopefully it lasts longer. I think being a good teammate is what really championship teams are all about.”
So will Lauther handle kicking duties for this week’s game against the Stamps?
“That’s the anticipation, but you never know how that goes,” Mace said. “I’d love to say everybody is going to play, but still have a couple days of practice.”
Kickoff for the game is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. The Green Zone pregame show begins at 3 p.m.
