Family of man bit by rattlesnake in Texas ‘trying everything’ to get him home to Sask.

With no medical insurance, the family of a man from Swift Current who bitten by a rattlesnake in Texas is desperately trying to bring him home.

At the end of July, Daniel Fehr was out for a round of golf in Odessa, Texas, when when he was bitten by a rattlesnake on the green. He was in the United States for work at the time.

Fehr was rushed to the ICU after going into anaphylactic shock and cardiac arrest due to the snake’s venom.

“The doctor said it’s a day-to-day thing now, so I don’t know if we’re gonna get him back or not,” said Stephanie Fehr, Daniel’s wife.

The day her husband was bitten, Stephanie said something just did not feel right when she didn’t hear from him. After her son checked his location, Stephanie said she began making panicked phone calls to the hospital to determine what had happened.

The family drove to Texas after they weren’t able to book flights on short notice.

Fehr has received treatment and underwent different procedures, including a tracheostomy. Stephanie said that her husband was “quite responsive” at first, but over the past few days his brain began swelling due to his injuries, and he has been unconscious since then.

“The kids are trying to be positive,” she said. “I know it’s really hard on them. They’re tired of being here. I’m tired of being here. We just want him home.”

Stephanie said there is a possibility that Fehr may need long-term care for the rest of his life.

“We don’t want to think about that right now,” she said. “We just want to take it day to day and hope he wakes up.”

Stephanie said she has been quoted figures as high as $91,000 to bring her husband back to Saskatchewan.

“It’s unbearable,” she said. “I don’t even want to know what the hospital bill is going to be when we’re done here.

“I just can’t think of that now right now. I’m just thinking about trying to get him home. We’re trying everything.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover some of Fehr’s medical expenses. On Wednesday morning, the fundraiser had brought in more than $31,000.

“People have just been amazing, and they’re always checking in to see how he’s doing and how we’re doing. It means a lot,” Stephanie said.

“The kindness of strangers lately has been a lot for me, too. It’s amazing.”
