The couple just celebrated their 69th marriage anniversary earlier this week with other residents at the Venvi Renaissance Retirement Residence in Regina.
The two farm kids got married on June 16, 1956 – one year before the Trans-Canada Highway was completed in Saskatchewan.
On Tuesday afternoon, the couple’s decades-long marriage was celebrated with tea and performances.
Bernadette McIntyre, the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, was also in attendance and shared stories from her recent meeting with King Charles III at at Buckingham Palace.
Joe said the secret to a long-lasting marriage was simple.
“You got to give and take both ways,” he said. “Otherwise it won’t work.”
Like every relationship, the two had their ups and downs during their marriage, but they always relied on each other.
“That’s the way it went,” Kathy said. “We always met with one another all the time.”
The pair said they enjoyed travelling throughout their marriage, going to places like Poland, Hawaii and Cuba.
Joe said his favourite memory throughout their marriage is shared between the birth of all three of their children.
The pair loves it when their grandchildren and great-grandchildren come to visit them.
