With the first official day of summer just around the corner, many people in Saskatchewan are wondering what kind of weather they can expect.
Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips was on the Greg Morgan Morning Show with guest host Kevin Martel, and he said warmer days are coming.
But first, he said some cooler weather is expected to start on Friday, the first official day of summer.

“It looks like a wet weekend. Normally I would say, ‘gee, it’s unfortunate you’re gonna get a wet weekend,’ But boy, I think rain at this time of the year is never a bad thing for farmers and ranchers and also forest firefighters and water managers.”

Phillips said a weather system is rolling in, bringing cooler air and rain.
“Maybe people are complaining about the changes in the weather, but I always think the change of the weather is good,” he said.
“I know it’s not great for sunning and going to the beach… But, it is going to come back.”

It comes after warmer-than-normal temperatures were recorded in May across the province, with five to six days where temperatures were 30 C or warmer.
“You had kind of a dress rehearsal in May,” he said.
Phillips said that warmer-than-normal temperatures can be anticipated for July and August, and September is also looking good.
“Maybe things have been delayed a bit,” he said. “So don’t give up on the summer yet just because you’ve had a change from what you had in May to what you’ve seen in June so far.”
It all comes as recent cooler and wetter weather in northern Saskatchewan has helped bring reprieve to wildfires.
