It was a hot weekend in Saskatchewan, with weather records falling like dominoes around the province.
According to Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, 14 communities around the province had their hottest May 3 on record, with Prince Albert breaking a record that had been standing since 1897.

Berg said Prince Albert reached 29.6 C on Saturday, beating the 128-year-old record of 27.8 C, which was set on May 5, 1897.
Other communities that set heat records Saturday included Buffalo Narrows (29 C), Elbow (29.4 C), Kindersley (30.2 C), La Ronge (24.6 C), Leader (30.1 C), Lloydminster (29 C), Lucky Lake (29.4 C), Outlook (30.4 C), Rosetown (30.7 C), Scott (29.6 C), Spritwood (29 C – tying the previous record from 2016), Waskesiu Lake (28.1 C) and Watrous (30.7 C).
Sunday was also a record-breaking day for heat in four Saskatchewan communities.
Coronach set a new record with 30.5 C on Sunday, Berg said, while Hudson Bay set a new record high for May 5 of 32.1 C. Rockglen hit 27.6 C on Sunday, while the Weyburn area set a new record with 30.5 C.
Berg said there was a trend among the records that fell on Sunday.
“All the previous records were from 2016, so that’s a bit of a pattern there,” the meteorologist explained.
“It’s been quite the swing.”
Berg said the sudden warm-up that much of Saskatchewan experienced over the weekend was due to a low-pressure system moving across Saskatchewan from Albert and the Northwest Territories, carrying lots of warm, southern air along with it.
He said forecasts indicate that temperatures will be going up and down throughout the week and into the weekend.
“There’ll be a bit of a temperate dip today and tomorrow, but then into Wednesday and Thursday it looks to be pretty warm – into the upper 20s again and maybe touching 30 C for parts of southeast Saskatchewan into Thursday, then cooling off with a bit of a cold front coming through on Friday,” Berg said.
“A bit cooler for Friday, but then temperatures (will be) picking back up again for southern Saskatchewan over the weekend, so kind of a bit of a seesaw effect.”
