“Officers immediately responded and located an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries,” the RCMP statement read.
The RCMP said investigating officers located a vehicle that was believed to be connected to the shooting, but the driver took off when the Mounties attempted a traffic stop.
“Officers pursued the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes. The occupants of the vehicle threw items from it as it was moving. The responding officers had to swerve the police vehicle to avoid the items,” the RCMP noted.
“The occupants also flashed a flashlight at a police vehicle in an apparent attempt to distract the officer driving.”
The chase came to an end on Highway 903, when the driver left the road and the vehicle came to a stop. A passenger was arrested, the RCMP said, while the driver took off on foot into a wooded area. He was also apprehended with help from a police dog and an aerial drone.
The RCMP said the driver and passenger – a 21-year-old from the Clearwater River Dene Nation and a 22-year-old from Edmonton – are each facing list charges including aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, careless use of a firearm, flight from a police officer, dangerous driving, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, unauthorized possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm, and more.
They’re both expected to appear in a Meadow Lake courtroom on May 5.
