Police officers in Saskatchewan handed out more than 2,200 warnings – and more than 1,000 speeding tickets – during a week-long traffic enforcement campaign last month.
According to the RCMP, Mounties and officers from other agencies around the province were out on the roads and highways conducting an enforcement campaign from May 16 to May 22 during Canada Road Safety Week.
The RCMP said officers handed out four Criminal Code charges for impaired driving along with 43 roadside suspensions for alcohol or drug impairment. Police also issued 1,091 speeding tickets, 82 tickets for distracted driving, 81 for seatbelt violations, 210 for invalid vehicle registration, and 62 for invalid drivers licences.
A total of 193 drivers were also issued inspection notices for vehicle defects.
Police warned more drivers than they fined, however. According to the RCMP, 2,273 warnings were issued during the seven-day blitz.
One traffic stop was especially notable, police said. On May 21, an officer with the Meadow Lake RCMP using an automated licence plate reader got an alert about a vehicle that may have been unregistered.
“Upon further investigation, the vehicle’s registration was expired by four months and the adult male driver didn’t possess a valid Saskatchewan driver’s licence,” the RCMP said in a statement. “The officer observed several cracks obscuring the view out the windshield and the bed of the pickup truck had lawn mowers stacked on top of other items with no tie-down or straps to prevent cargo from falling out of the vehicle.”
That driver was issued three separate tickets for a total of $905 in fines, the RCMP noted, along with an inspection notice regarding the cracked windshield.
“Although Canada Road Safety Week has concluded for 2023, Saskatchewan RCMP is committed to road safety all year long. We will continue to focus our efforts on eliminating high-risk driving behaviours,” Sgt. Ian Amundsen with Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services said in a statement.
