Puzzling text messages are being sent to Saskatchewan phone numbers.
The message includes a woman’s name, the words “localhorny” and a link for the recipient to click.
SaskTel says it’s aware of the messages and noted there was an increase in the messages over the weekend.
SaskTel’s Greg Jacobs said the messages are similar to scam text messages and phone call campaigns.
“The scammers in this case have just decided to take a more lewd path towards their end goal,” he said.
Jacobs added that normally what happens with such messages is they’ll go to a specific area code for a period of time.
He’s recommending that people treat the text messages the same as they would treat any other scam.
“Your best bet is just to ignore it. Don’t even respond. Please do not click on the link,” Jacobs said.
He added if people feel like they’ve fallen victim to the scam, they should contact local police.
As for preventing these types of messages, Jacobs said people can block the numbers. Additionally, there are apps that can help filter out some of these calls.
SaskTel says it’s always working with other telecommunication companies and the CRTC to implement new rules and policies that will help filter out similar messages and phone calls.
Jacobs added it does take time because scammers will change the way they reach out to people.
He noted there are suggestions on SaskTel’s website on what people can do to protect themselves from scammers.
