Get ready for lots of delays and lane restrictions in Saskatoon as the summer road construction season gets underway.
Terry Schmidt, the city’s general manager of roadways and construction, says this year, $65.16 million has been earmarked for improvements.
One of the biggest projects, set to begin next week, will take place in one of the busiest corridors in the city where more than 56,000 vehicles travel every day: Circle Drive North, between Millar Avenue and Alberta Avenue.
“We anticipate it will take about two months to complete the Circle Drive North project,” Schmidt said. “It will be done in phases. When the concrete work is being done, it will be done first …
“There’ll be lane restrictions adjacent to the curbs and then when we resurface it, we will be closing all of the eastbound lanes and that work will be done at night.”
The eastbound lanes will be reopened at 7 a.m. The westbound lanes will be done next summer.
Other notable summer projects include repaving the Attridge Drive Overpass beginning in July, and maintenance work on the Spadina Crescent Bridge between Queen Street and 25th Street.
Road resurfacing will also take place on Warman Road. Waterline and lead service line replacement work that began last year on Ruth Street will be completed this year, and the street is expected to be resurfaced as well.
Schmidt says city crews will also continue work on the many, many potholes across the city.
“Crews have been working seven days a week and actually around the clock … We’ve been working in the night repairing potholes, so that work is well underway,” he said.
The King George, Nutana and North Downtown areas will also see sidewalk and road improvements.
