Dates have been set for a public inquest into the death of Benjamin Toutsaint.
The inquest, to be presided over by coroner Brent Gough, is to be held March 21-25 at the Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre.
Toutsaint, 32, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon on May 18, 2019. Resuscitation efforts were attempted, but Toutsaint was pronounced dead.
The Coroners Act requires the chief coroner to hold an inquest when a person dies while they’re an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied the person died due to natural causes and their death wasn’t preventable.
After the inquest, the coroner’s jury can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths from happening.
