“Every letter is earned,” the NHL says in its newest commercial, as it shows names engraved on the Stanley Cup and spelled out by Lemieux, Gretzky, Crosby, Keon, Trottier . . .
Here’s a lesser-known name: D-A-V-I-S.
Inspired by that commercial and this time of the hockey season, I checked out an old, grainy, black-and-white video on YouTube of the 1953 Stanley Cup final series. Montreal versus Boston.
Number 22 for the Canadiens is Lorne Davis, my dad.
The video shows him taking a pass from Dollard St. Laurent and firing a wrist shot for Montreal’s first goal in Game 4. The highlight package also shows him nearly scoring in the dying seconds of Game 5, the Cup-winning contest ultimately won 1-0 on Elmer Lach’s overtime goal. A celebration followed.
Lorne Davis’ name went on the Stanley Cup afterwards, beside many more of my hockey heroes.
