Regina employee falls 18 ft. while working on water line

The specialized technical unit of the Regina Fire & Protective Services was called out Monday afternoon as a City of Regina employee had fallen into an 18-foot trench.

The man had been working on replacing the water line on Dewdney Avenue near Athol Street when he fell from a ladder into the trench.

Deputy fire Chief David Kinvig said the worker was communicative with the rescue crew, however, couldn’t move his leg.

“He’s not stuck, he just got an injured leg,” he said. “We don’t know if it’s broke or not but we’ll get him out and we’ll go from there.”

Kinvig said that situations like this one are rare as proper safety measures were taken. He added that there’s a reason why Regina fire has the technical rescue crew.

“They do special rescues like this,” he said. “High angle, confined spaces, trench and tight space rescues is what they respond to.”

The worker was talking with the medics on scene after he was lifted out of the hole which he was in then was immediately taken to the hospital.
