In a release issued Tuesday morning, the City of Saskatoon said after a short delay to address health and safety measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to expand its workforce, weekly residential garbage collection will start May 18.
The delay affected the city’s previous plan to start weekly collection on May 1.
Last month, city administration said it was going to suspend weekly garbage pickup and stay with the bi-weekly schedule because of COVID-19 concerns about employee physical distancing.
At the time, administration said it would have to hire additional workers to accommodate weekly pickup and that would mean close-contact training in and around vehicles.
However, that decision did not sit well with city councillors, who said they received a lot of negative feedback from citizens.
Saskatoon city council held a vote to overturn the administration decision, and go back to the original plan of weekly pickup.
That vote passed 6-5, so weekly garbage collection will go ahead but has been delayed from the original May 1 date, to now beginning May 18.
The city says residents’ collection days will stay the same as they are in the current bi-weekly schedule.
Online collection calendars have been updated to reflect the change, so residents are reminded to check their schedules to ensure they don’t miss their collection day.
Weekly collections will remain in effect until the end of September.
