One of the biggest parades of the year in Saskatoon won’t happen in its usual June slot, as Saskatoon Pride announced Thursday they wouldn’t be holding their annual festival in 2020.
In a Facebook post, Pride organizers said that their board of directors made the decision due to COVID-19 developments and Saskatchewan’s continuing state of emergency.
The annual event is held in June as a show of support for the city’s LGBTQ2S+ community, and to raise awareness about equality for members of the community.
They specified while the festival’s “physical format” wouldn’t be held in June, they are looking at an “appropriate time” to possibly hold some events in the fall.
“In the meantime, Saskatoon Pride is working hard to provide digital events that will connect Saskatoon’s queer community and its allies during this challenging time,” the post reads, noting an online “Let’s Get Digital” event will be held April 10.
The organizers also note any future programming would follow recommendations from public health authorities.
The post also assures its supporters that they will be back.
“Pride is important in our community. It is much more than a party,” it reads.
“We are all part of Pride and Pride is here in Saskatoon to stay.”
