I couldn’t help but notice some empty seats at the Bell Centre for last night’s World Junior Hockey Championships quarter-final between Canada and the Czech Republic.
There was also some discussion on social media about the reasons for those empty seats.
There are some things to remember. This is the second time in three years that Toronto and Montreal have hosted this event together. The 2017 event also marks the fifth time in nine years that Canada has hosted the World Junior Hockey Championships. In the previous nine years, from 2000 to 2008, Canada only hosted it twice.
Don’t get me wrong. This nation hosts the best, most profitable, World Junior Hockey Championships on the planet. Let’s be honest, money makes the world go around.
However, if the World Junior Hockey Championships go from occasional spectacle to regularly scheduled Canadian event every two years or so, expect the odd empty seat.
