In a media release sent late Friday, the University of Saskatchewan said it will be suspending all classes on campus from Monday through Wednesday.
The release said this is one part of additional guidelines being implemented as part of the U of S’s COVID-19 strategy.
Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer has indicated that gatherings of more than 250 people pose a potential health risk at this time. The U of S release indicated that although many classes comprise fewer than 250 people, students congregate in much larger numbers getting to and from class. The university does have some classes that are larger than 250 students.
The university will not be closed, but beginning Thursday, it will move to remote delivery of classes for the rest of the winter term.
The release also said the U of S is cancelling all non-essential events hosted on campus for the time being that are not core to its teaching mandate.
Travel is also affected by the new protocols. The university is suspending all international travel for students, faculty and staff until further notice, and asking faculty and students to reconsider all domestic travel plans if they are not critical.
The university will continue to monitor the status of its recreational facilities, gymnasiums, exercise rooms and pools, and says it will advise immediately of any restrictions or changes in operation.
The release, sent on behalf of U of S president Peter Stoicheff, adds: “We understand there is uncertainty and concern at this time, but be assured that our preparations and planning processes are in place to protect the health and safety of our campus community. That is our top priority.”
